April Stories: Humans of Wayne County CASA

April Roundup

APRIL 2025

We are proud to spotlight two extraordinary individuals who truly embody the CASA spirit of care and compassion. Although Horace and Erin contribute to our CASA program in distinct ways, each plays a crucial role in supporting our operations. Be sure to read their inspiring stories!

HORACE E. STONE, JR., CASA VOLUNTEER

“We found that the population that gets short-changed the most is children.”

With nearly 30 years of experience in education, and as an ordained minister, Horace E. Stone, Jr. focuses his efforts to empower children to be the best they can be in mind, body and soul. Horace is a proud native Detroiter who takes pride in his city by supporting scholars in inner-city K-8 schools.

“Educators have a “ground zero” view of the needs of the students in our schools and community.”

Horace first heard about Wayne County CASA from one of his mentors and past CASA volunteer. Upon the recommendation of someone who had experienced firsthand, the impact of CASA advocacy, Horace submitted his application to be screened and join the training.

“I can see the positive impact of my efforts to assist in changing the trajectory of young people’s lives for the better.”

Mentorship has played a vital role in the life of Horace. He readily recalls words of wisdom from his mentors who planted “seeds of giving” in his life.

“The mission continues because the need is great…I aim to continue supporting the scholars I represent to adulthood. Then, I will work on the next set of children I can assist.”

Erin Simmerman

ERIN SIMMERMAN, CASA EVENT COMMITTEE MEMBER

“When I learned about [Wayne County CASA], I had an immediate connection and wanted to support the work.”

Erin is a nurse practitioner and graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. She is actively involved in her community and in her free time enjoys traveling and tennis. Erin joined the Event Committee in 2024 to help put together Wayne County CASA’s annual fundraising luncheon, ‘Spring Into Hope.’

“I enjoy being a part of the planning for what turns into a wonderful event, supporting an amazing mission.”

Erin enthusiastically recalls her experience of attending the fundraiser she helped plan and knowing that her efforts contributed to making meaningful strides to provide advocacy for more children in foster care. Erin shared how the stories she heard at the fundraiser were filled with resilience and hope, painting a vivid picture of the significant impact of CASA volunteers.

“I was thrilled to be a part of it and am looking forward to this year’s event on May 6th!!”
