What is a CASA Volunteer?

CASA Volunteer Requirements

CASA volunteers must be 21 years or older to volunteer and make a commitment to remain with their child until they are discharged from the case. On average, CASA volunteers spend 10-15 hours per month on their case(s). All volunteers undergo a thorough background, screening, and interview process and must complete 30 hours of pre-service training including courtroom observation prior to being assigned a case.

CASA Volunteer Responsibilities

On the child’s behalf, CASA volunteers seek provision of a permanent family environment that is both safe and nurturing.  The CASA volunteer is not to provide services, but to assemble and provide information that, based on findings, describes needed services. Recommendations to the court are therefore requests for the proper person or agency to fulfill those needs. The goal of the Wayne County CASA program is to advocate for what is best for each child, and to see that every effort is made to reunify families when possible. When reunification is not possible, it is also the goal of Wayne County CASA to ensure that each child is placed in a home that offers stability, permanency, and a nurturing environment.
